Blood emergency latest in string of weather-related effects

URGENT MEDIA STATEMENT

Carter BloodCare is appealing to the community to prepare to give blood when they open doors on Thursday, February 18.

The blood program has already encouraged hospitals to implement blood management protocols and to share their life-saving blood supplies with facilities treating the most medically urgent patients. The limited blood supply is a grim result of the weather developments of the last week, topping off a yearlong viral pandemic. Selfless volunteers are the sole providers of essential blood transfusions for patients. Laboratories cannot manufacture blood. Carter BloodCare is asking individuals who can safely travel to donate blood beginning Thursday.

“We are uncertain how many donation locations we can open on Thursday, but we urge people to visit our website where we will post the most updated information,” said Veronica Moore, vice president of organizational relations, Carter BloodCare. “Nationwide, the blood supply is crippled. We have struggled daily to meet hospital demands for patients throughout the pandemic, but the effects of this winter storm amplify an already insufficient supply.”

Carter BloodCare’s call-to-action is simple:

Visit the website carterbloodcare.org to find the blood donation centers that are open near you.

A donation made on Thursday could be ready for a patient as soon as the next day. Walk-ins are welcomed, but donors may also text 800-366-2834 for appointments.
