Spring welcomes new life: perfect time to donate blood, give patients renewed hope

Texas Bank and Trust, Starbucks, The Fairways to host upcoming blood drives with Carter BloodCare

LONGVIEW, Texas (March 23, 2018) – Remaining cold weather will soon give way to extended daylight hours, awakening of budding trees and the beauty of floral landscapes. Carter BloodCare hopes these signs of new life will prompt residents to give a pint of life through the act of blood donation. Giving blood is one of the best ways to perform a random act of kindness for someone in need – potentially a patient struggling between life and death.

Hospitals have an ongoing requirement for blood; collectively, they fulfill 600 to 700 transfusion orders daily. As the community blood supplier, Carter BloodCare needs to see more than 1,000 blood donors a day to keep pace with demand.

Texas Bank and Trust is hosting two opportunities to donate blood this month. The first blood drive is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at 300 East Whaley in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. The second drive is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at 1800 Northwest Loop 281 in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time for either drive, contact Rebecca Norris at (903) 237-5593.

Starbucks is hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 30, at 407 West Loop 281 in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Charlotte Jordan at (903) 574-4998.

The Fairways is hosting a blood drive from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 30, at 3623 McCann Road in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Alicia Tabor at (903) 663-3024.

There is no substitute for human blood. Each person, even with the same blood type, gives a unique blood donation. A wide diversity of blood donors is also necessary to maintain a safe and sufficient blood supply.

Remember to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water one to two hours before giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood.

Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
