Blood products delivered for Fort Hood shooting response

Blood supply stable, no urgent need

Blood center responds to hospitals’ requests after Fort Hood shooting

The blood center is primary blood supplier to Central Texas area hospitals

KILLEEN, Texas (Apr. 2, 2014) – As of 7 p.m. Central Daylight Time, Carter BloodCare reports that area hospitals requested specific blood products to support their care of the injured from the Fort Hood shooting. Several people died and others were injured during a shooting early this evening.

Thanks to regular blood donors, the blood center was able to meet the need. Our sympathies go out to those connected in any way with this tragedy.

If you want to help replenish the blood supply, this is a time to make appointments and not to donate blood in urgency. We do have a need for those with blood types O and B Rh negative and for platelet donors. If you fit these categories of blood donors, please consider making an appointment in the next two weeks.

Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
